Sleepy. Angry. Dirty. These are not just some of Snow White’s seven dwarfs.
Hurt feelings are some of the main consequences of jet lag.
But interstate and international fliers can now heave a sigh of relief, as new research has revealed the 10 most unique, unconventional hacks to avoid drag—and travelers can count on their feet to accomplish the feat.
“This study shows that beating jet lag is part science, part creative problem solving,” said Yulia Saf, founder of the globetrotting site Miss Tourist.
After an in-depth analysis on Reddit, Saf, a full-time “world citizen” of six years originally from Russia, revealed that he was “feeling gassy thinking you’ve had enough sleep,” “making punches with your toes “. €€ and “Using a leg hammock on the plane”, will be the three most unique ways to fight the delay.
“While most people stick to the basics like adjusting their sleep schedule and using melatonin,” the pro said, “it’s the quirky hacks that really caught our attention.”
Jet-lag has plagued countless people on the go for decades.
Temporary sleep disturbance often plagues airline passengers traveling across more than three time zones.
The strange condition rears its ugly head when the body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm, is out of sync with new sleep-wake cycles, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Symptoms of lethargy include insomnia, drowsiness, headache, upset stomach and mood swings.
To avoid the side effects of jet lag, sleep experts recently advised travelers to change their sleep schedule a few days before flying in the friendly skies, limit alcohol intake during the flight and avoid napping after landing .
Researchers from Northwestern University and the Santa Fe Institute have also encouraged vacationers to eat a big breakfast after reaching their destination to reduce the risk of time zone fatigue.
“Having a larger meal in the early morning of the new time zone may help overcome jet lag,” said lead author Yitong Huang. “Constantly changing meal times or eating a meal at night is discouraged, as it can lead to a mismatch between internal clocks.â€
And while Saf agrees that dining arrangements are essential, she analyzed over 2,000 comments on several travel-related subreddits using a Natural Language Processing (NLP) tool to identify and rank the best jet lag remedies .
After “foot punching” and “foot hammocks” on her list is “barefoot walks.” This is a trick that biohackers have long touted as a quick fix for post-travel fatigue. Practitioners believe that directly reconnecting the body to the ground after a long flight helps avoid any unwanted effects.
“These strange strategies prove that there is no single solution to conquering time zones,” Saf said. “What works for one person may not work for another.”
“In the end, overcoming jet lag is as much an adventure as the journey itself – and often just as unpredictable.”
Here’s a list of the wildest ways people on the internet are beating jet lag.
- Wake yourself up thinking you’ve had enough sleep
- Make fists with your toes
- Use a leg hammock on the plane
- Bring gifts to the flight staff in hopes of VIP treatment and better sleep
- Use a grounding mat/pad to reconnect to Earth’s electrons
- Try hyperbaric oxygen therapy
- Avoid sitting on comfortable furniture upon arrival
- Take barefoot walks upon arrival
- Fly on a Boeing 787 for better cabin pressure
- Watch the sunrise and sunset at your destination
